This blog is my way of making a contribution to the ‘discussion’…if you know what I mean. As those of you who know me can attest, I am very good at having an opinion on something…just about anything in fact :-)…but not so good at doing anything about it. Well this is me ‘doing something about it’. A couple of years ago I was introduced to some very interesting and thought provoking concepts through the leadership unit that I was asked to teach at a Business School here is Western Australia.
The central theme of the concepts is that many of the problems that we face as a species (climate change, poverty, drugs, dwindling resources) are adaptive challenges, meaning they not only defy solving but often even defy definition, many solutions have been tried without success, they will often involve a significant loss to many of the stakeholder and the solution may be beyond our current skills and experiences, among other defining elements. Perhaps most importantly, the solutions may also lie beyond our current leadership paradigms. We need to look at other definitions and models of leadership if we want to find meaningful, long term solutions to these kinds of problem.
The impact the concepts have regularly had on people I talk to about them suggested to me that there may be a wider audience for them. And I was pleasantly surprised how many people found the concepts useful in the their private and personal lives as well as their professional lives. I shouldn’t have been surprised really because, when I think about it, they so obviously lend themselves to it! 
So I began to ponder how best to disseminate this info….I didn’t want to just target businesses through consulting because, as I said, the concepts are applicable to a much wider audience. In fact just targeting businesses and organisations flies directly in the face of one of the central ideas that leadership is too big for just business or government to do. But I didn’t really see how I could get it out to everyone else. And then a friend suggested blogging….and here we are!
The plan is for this blog to be complemented by the Click by Click website (www.clarksonread.com). It is up and running at the moment if you want to have a look but more content needs to be added. Excuse the ambiguous URL but I still haven’t totally settled on Click by Click as a name…so no point buying domain names yet! Any thoughts on the name btw? The content on the website will be a bit more referential, structured and will provide the context for a lot of what goes on here. The content here will be more observational, topical and chatty. I think that having both allows for a much more complete ‘experience’.
Lets see how we go!
